ESPORTS MYTHS DEBUNKED: PLAY OR GET PLAYED BY MYTHS

PUBG got banned in India recently and parents thought that it was just a game which people spent hours on. Well, games aren’t just meant for entertainment. For some, it is their passion and source of income. People have made lots of money by playing games professionally and is a huge market all around the world.

Here I am about to break these misconceptions and myths that you might have about Esports:

1. The Pros have a short career:

Yes, this could be true for their gaming career. But when it comes to other job opportunities related to Esports, there are quite a few and the pros get into those after they stop gaming.

They often become coaches, casters and join the businesses of Esports, such as organizing events, or help developing and reviewing new games. If they do not wish to continue in the same line, many pros have college degrees or are studying while they play professionally.


2. Pros don’t get to make a lot of money:

Pros tend to be part of an organization or a team who play professionally where they get salaries. If that’s not the case then they earn through their tournament earnings and brand deals. Many gaming companies tend to sponsor these players in order to promote their games due to the large audience that they attract.

Teams have their own merchandise and tend to organize their own events which make them additional money apart from winnings.


3. Winning tournaments doesn’t mean profits:


Contrary to what is mentioned above, winnings don’t always turn into profit as there are many expenses other than the player salaries. The set-up costs, accommodation costs, various requirements are a huge part of the expenses that pros incur.


Only 40% of the expenses are taken up by player salaries, the rest of it is the other overhead expenses. The gaming event organizers don’t always provide accommodation even if they have big budgets. The players have to pay for the stay and the rest in order to take part in the event.


4. Esports doesn’t require practice:

Just like any other sport an esports pro has to practice in order to get better at the game. There’s hours and hours of game time behind the pros. There are even strategies involved in plays that help them get wins.


The carryout practice sessions in order to look at the mistakes they make and then correct them so that it increases their chances of winning. This is why they even have coaches to teach them certain strategies or guide them as to how they can get better.


5. Esports can be spelled a number of ways:

Yes, you read it right. It is a myth that esports can be spelt a number of ways such as E-sports, e-sports, etc. Surprised? In 2017, Associated Press published that the official spelling would be esports or Esports.

So, to the people out there, who think that Esports would have no future or people don’t survive by sitting and playing games is a myth. Few fun facts about Esports which might make you want to start as well:


1. The Esport market is valued at over $1 billion.

2. It has more fans than baseball.

3. Esports could become a part of the Olympics.

4. For all the Call of Duty lovers, COD is an Esport.

5. It is the 4th biggest sport in the world.
