TOP 10 FOOD MYTHS | WHAT ARE WE CONSUMING?

Updated: Sep 24, 2020

Need a scientific and factually proven comeback the next time your mother tells you "Don't have ice-cream, it will make your cold worse" or when a random distant aunt asks you to give up on biryani because apparently "Rice makes you fat"? Well, you are in for a treat. (Yes, pun intended!)

If you have grown up in a desi household, (and even if you have not) there are some myths about the food we eat, that we have either read somewhere or have been constantly drilled into our minds. It is time to break these misconceptions down!

1. Eating Ice-Cream Makes Your Cold Worse

No, it does not. If you are not eating your favorite Cornetto or kulfi, now is the time to make a quick run for it! As said by Researchers at the Mayo Clinic, something like an ice-cream can help you with your sore throat and in fact, give you a boost of calories when you otherwise may not have.

FINALLY! After all, cold beats the cold.

2. Frozen Or Fried Food Is Not Good For Health

If the pandemic has taught us something, it is that we CAN cook. But, do we need to? Won't it be amazing to just enjoy being lazy, sit back and just make some fries instead of making them from scratch! Food products immediately frozen share the SAME nutrient profile as their fresh alternative. That being said, one must always read the nutrition labels before buying frozen and canned products.

Don't be afraid, it isn't THAT unsafe!

3. Chocolate Helps In Instant Stress Relief

How true is this, you ask? It indeed IS very true. The thing about myths is, we do not believe them even if they sound too good to be true. Studies have revealed that chocolate can suppress how irritated we feel during our mood swings, and calm us down when we are too anxious, by releasing neurochemicals such as Serotonin.

Stressed? Well, not as much now!

4. Do Not Drink Milk After Eating Fish

Really? No. Some of us just have our own favorite foods, right? But we don't get to have it all. Well, milk and fish are actually a healthy combination and trust me, it will NOT lead to any spots on your skin.

But please don't indulge in milk chugging like Joey here.

5. Midnight Snacking Can Lead To Fattening

It is 3 A.M. You are watching Netflix and all your favorite actor is doing is hogging pizzas. "Just a little bite of the cake that's still left over", you think to yourself but you remember your fitness routine (which is barely a routine :p) and end up overthinking.

We are all ruled by our mid-night hunger snacks, aren't we?

Here's the truth. Dunn Nutrition Centre found out that late night bites do not show any signs of gaining weight by storing more fat. So what are you waiting for? It's snack time!

We all are ruled by our midnight food cravings, right?

6. Diet Soda Helps You In Staying Slim

So far, we have made you too happy. What with all the lucky strikes on junk food that you are going to have in the coming days! We hate to break it to you that while Diet Sodas are lower in calories in comparison to regular soda, they use artificial sweeteners instead of regular sugar. These could lead to hunger pangs later in the day and have been linked with weight gain.

CAUTION: That summer body is not just because of Diet Coke.

7. Egg Yolks Are A Big No-No For Good Health

An egg a day does NOT cause an increased risk of a heart attack. Whole egg is high in cholesterol but low in trans fat and it has little impact on blood cholesterol levels, as studied by Harvard Medical School. National Center for Biotechnology published a study in 2012 where it found no negative impact of egg yolk on various indices of cardiovascular health and disease. This MAY VARY if the person has diabetes, or some other pre-existing disease and has been told not to consume egg yolk specifically. But if that's not your case - the next time, just make the omelet using the entire egg!

Because who doesn't like runny eggs!

8. Stay Away From Sugar, Stay Away From Diabetes

If you think stopping your sugar intake alone will keep diabetes at bay - it won't. It will kill a few calories, sure. But it will not completely block away all the chances. Diabetes is a disorder of carbs metabolism, the lifestyle one lives and physical inactivity. We are not suggesting you consume sweet food till you get a sugar rush, but cutting it out entirely won't be extremely helpful either!

Hey, know your limits though!

9. Milk Builds Strong Bones – White Lies Much?

Are you a black coffee or juice lover trying to fit in more dairy in your diet to build stronger bones, or are trying to fight your parents so you don’t have to drink Bournvita or Complan every day? Get ready for a shocker! Milk isn’t as good as it has been advertised to be. A 2010 study in the journal of Nutrition in Clinical Practice found out that apart from not being your favorite drink, milk is ALSO guilty of making some bones lose calcium. Surprisingly, in 2009 American Journal of Clinical Nutrition dug out data to find out that the rate of bone fractures were highest in countries that consumed dairy!

You may have a valid reason now, you must drink at least a little!

So lastly…dropping the truth bomb…..

10. Does Rice Make You Fat?

Because we want you to leave this blog with a smile on your face (and your favorite food on your plate, that you have been avoiding so far) let us break it to you that rice DOES not make you gain weight! Until you eat a balanced amount of rice, and unless you do not finish what was made for your entire family, you are good to go!

So no matter what anyone says, go ahead and eat that biryani! And while you’re listening to us, also give this article a big like and share! Comment below what are your opinions, and let us know what you feel.

Stay tuned for the next blog! Coming Soon :D
