The War Vs COVID-19 Myths: Bigger than the virus itself

© Everyday Health

Even after several months into the lockdown. awareness drives by Governments and Organizations from around the world there is still a lot of misinformation and myths being spread regarding the Coronavirus especially on social media.

The initial havoc and panic that followed the COVID 19 pandemic have given birth to these myths and misconceptions around the virus. In such grave and extreme times, people have opinions and suggestions that they may preach without proper knowledge. These suggestions often lack foundation and credibility. They becloud the truth and hinders with the judgment of people. Myths such as "Can turmeric help cure corona? Do Ayurveda and homoeopathy help prevent corona? What is the mystery behind people hoarding toilet papers?" are still believed by people.

This blog aims to demystify these myths and attempts to fine line the difference between facts and fiction.

Myth 1: COVID-19 can spread via food

© Euro Coop | No food does not spread the virus

Although this myth was cleared a long time ago, still many believe this. COVID-19 ONLY spreads through respiratory droplets of the infected person suspended in the air.

The myth that it can spread through meat, fish etc or eating food from outside can spread the infection (We recommend avoiding or keeping social distacing while eating outside). You can still get the virus if social distancing is not maintained from the food server and they are infected.

You can enjoy your food as you like, JUST MAINTAIN SOCIAL DISTANCING!

Myth 2: Home Remedies such as eating Garlic or Onion help eliminate the risk of catching Coronavirus

© Global Times | Good for immunity

The main culprit for this myth is clearly the coveted "WhatsaApp Forwards", which many people seem to blindly believe even more so than their doctor. Such home remedies used to prevent Common Cold and Flu are not a remedy against coronavirus.

Time and again we see some new home remedy pop-up that people start adhering to. These remedies do not cure the virus but these ayurvedic solutions are indeed healthy and helpin boosting immunity. Thus, these can help you build a good immunity and decrease your risk. But even so, some of these WhatsApp remedies are totally useless and should be ignored. For authentic ayurervedic options, one should refer to an expert.

Myth 3: There is no hope of a COVID-19 Vaccine as its a Virus

© Times of India

The most talked about myth of the pandemic, many believe there will never be a successful vaccine for COVID-19 as there has never been one fixed vaccine for Flu. But instead of generalizing all the types of coronaviruses, we should see them as seperate cases.

The SARS-COV-2 is not mutating as much as the Flu does which is why scientist believe they will be able to create a vaccine for it. There are already multiple vaccines in advanced stages and will be approved for use in the coming months. Even a partially effective vaccine will help curb the spread hugely.

Myth 4: Cats and Dogs can spread COVID-19

© BBC | Don't blame our furry friends for our fault!

This is just a myth created to induce more fear among the people. Unlike what many people believe, Cats and Dogs are NOT a carrier of the virus. This is just another myth created by the chaos and over-reaction of people surrounding the pandemic. Even the few isolated cases caused in them were transmitted by humans and there is absolutely no evidence of them spreading it.

We recommend keep your furry friends close to your heart as they can uplift you mood during these uncertain times!

Myth 5: Drinking alcohol reduces the risk of getting infected

© Minnpost | Its not party time yet.

One of the silliest myths of this list, alcohol drinks and rubbing alcohol are totally differents worlds. Yet some people believe alcohol will cleanse your body from inside like rubbing alcohol does from the outside.

Genuinely Clueless or an excuse to have a few more drinks?

What're the silliest COVID-19 Myths you have ever heard?
